A PRIVATE CHAT WITH...

MALIN BARYARD

When was your very first equestrian competition?
It was so long ago, I can’t really remember … I started riding at six, and I think I was eight or nine years old when I started competing. In 1989, I won my first national competition and after that I had quite a lot of success with my pony Innishannon.

What’s the highlight of your career so far?
I must say the team silver medal at the Olympics in 2004 for sure! I rode Butterfly Flip, it’s an incredible memory.  I had already been third at the Las Vegas World Cup Final the previous year which is also a great memory to me.

Which Grand Prix would you like to win?
This one here, tomorrow! (Grand Prix of the Jumping International du Château de Versailles) Each five-star Grand Prix is important and to just win one is an achievement in my career.

If you had not gone into horse riding, what would you have liked to do?
I have no idea, I really started with horses when I was 6 years old and I love them ever since so I definitely don’t know what else I could have done.

What is your favorite city?
Maybe Stockholm, my home city, but I also love London and of course, Paris.

What is your favorite dish?
I really like grilled food now, especially with Summer coming up.

Which object do you always keep with you?
Probably my phone.

Who is your favorite athlete?
I must say Zlatan Ibrahimović.

Do you have a favorite piece or type of music?
I do like music that gives me energy. It can be pop music one day and heavy metal the next day, but always energetic music! It really depends on what I’m doing.

Which holiday destination do you prefer?
I definitely need the sun when I’m on holidays.

The best movie of all times?
That’s very difficult! I don’t have a favorite one, I can’t choose.

What kind of TV shows do you like?
To be honest I don’t watch TV but I’m a huge fan of Homeland.

How do you spend your ideal Sunday (when you are not in a show jumping event)?  I love to spend time with my kids and my husband.

What is your everyday car? and your dream car?
I drive a BMW and it’s already my dream car!
